Respiratory Muscle Strength Training (RMST)

What Is Respiratory Muscle Strength Training (RMST)?

Your breathing muscles can be trained—just like any other muscle in your body.

Respiratory Muscle Strength Training (RMST) is a targeted form of exercise to strengthen the muscles responsible for inhalation and exhalation. Similar to strength training for the arms or legs, RMST provides a measurable way to challenge and progressively train the respiratory muscles.

At Southern Speech & Myo, RMST may include Inspiratory Muscle Strength Training (IMST), Expiratory Muscle Strength Training (EMST), or a combination of both. We can assess measures such as Maximum Inspiratory Pressure (MIP) and Maximum Expiratory Pressure (MEP) to establish a baseline and track changes over time.

RMST may be incorporated into care for individuals interested in breathing efficiency, respiratory muscle strength, athletic performance, endurance, voice and respiratory support, or as an adjunct to a broader airway-focused treatment plan.

Your program is individualized based on your goals, baseline measurements, and clinical needs.

Assess. Train. Strengthen. Breathe. Perform.

RMST is ideal for:

  • Individuals with Obstructive Sleep Apnea: Support airway health and improve sleep quality through targeted breathing exercises.

  • Athletes: Boost stamina, recover fast, and take your performance to the next level.

  • First Responders: Increase breathing strength and endurance to carry heavy loads and perform at your best under pressure.

  • Musicians (wind & brass players): Gain better breath control, stronger projection, and the ability to sustain notes longer.

  • Performers: Breathe with power and control so your voice, stamina, and presence never fade.

  • Individuals with Parkinson’s and Other Neurological Conditions: Neurological conditions can weaken the breath. RMST builds it back, helping you speak, swallow, and live stronger.
